If tyres are not handled and stored properly, their life span can be affected. But if you handle and store them correctly, they will deliver years of service.
We put together a list of 5 tips on how to store and take care of your tyres.
1. Clean them before you store them.
By simply cleaning your tyres with some detergent, water and a tire brush before storing them. You ensure that there are no grime, dirt, or chemicals that can harm your tires while they are stored. Clean your wheels and rims as well if you plan on storing your tires on them.
2. Keep them out of the sun.
When you store your tyres make sure the area where they are kept is out of direct sunlight. UV rays and the sun’s heat can wreak havoc on rubber.
3. Choosing where to store your tyres.
In cold or warm weather, make sure that the storage space is not standing in an open space. Even if the space has a protective covering, you should always think; is this space cool, dry, moderately ventilated and don’t forget about tip 2 (keep them out of the sun). A basement or a climate-controlled space is ideal.
4. Avoid Ozone.
Your number one chemical to avoid: Ozone. It’s particularly damaging to tyres and rubber. There are a few electrical devices that produce ozone, by removing the below items from your tyre storage area you will reduce the risk.
- Generators
- Compressors
- Switches
- Central vacuum cleaners
You should also avoid storing your tyres next to:
- Solvents
- Fuels
- Lubricants
5. Bag them.
When bagging your tyres, you can use yard bags or leaf bags. Make sure the bag is dry, then remove as much air as possible (an easy way to do this is with a vacuum cleaner) before taping it close. This process will help reduce the oil evaporation from rubber.
